Queensland Skilled Occupation Lists indicate what professions are in high-demand and are needed to fill skill shortages in the State. Everyone looking to apply for a Skilled Visa in QLD must have an occupation in one of those lists and meet the state requirements.

To apply for a permanent skilled nominated 190 visa or a temporary regional 491 visa with nomination by Queensland, you must be pre-selected by the State and receive an invitation to apply for State Nomination, once this is an “invitation only” system. If QLD agrees to nominate you, then you will be invited by SkillSelect to apply for the visa.

To be selected by QLD, and invited by SkillSelect, you need to first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with SkillSelect. You will only be invited by QLD, then the Department of Home Affairs, if you meet these requirements:

  • score at least 65 on the points test – unless QLD requires a higher score;
  • have an occupation in one of the Queensland Skilled Occupation lists;
  • have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation;
  • be under 45 years of age;
  • meet the minimum English language requirement for your occupation;
  • commit to living and working in Queensland for 2 years for a 190 visa and 3 years for the 491after the visa is granted.

Before we dive into the Queensland Skilled Occupation Lists, there are 3 streams available in QLD with different requirements:

Graduates of a Queensland university

Queensland has maintained its Graduate and Working in QLD pathways with almost the same requirements as last year, keeping nominations open to all professionals on the relevant Skilled occupation list – which we are providing below in this article.

International Students completing a PhD could be nominated for a permanent 190 Skilled visa whereas those completing a Masters or Bachelors degree can only express interest to the 491 Temporary Regional Visa and only if they have a job offer in QLD (among other requirements).

Skilled workers living in Queensland

Skilled professionals working in QLD on a full-time basis (so people holding Graduate Visas or Sponsorship Visas for example) could be nominated for both the 190 or 491, but they would have to be working in QLD in their nominated occupation for 6 or 3 months full time respectively.

  • (If applying for the 190) you must have been living in Queensland and have worked on a full-time basis for the past 6 months in your nominated occupation. You will also have to show evidence of ongoing employment with a QLD employer for the next 12 months;
  • (If applying for the 491) you must have been living in Regional Queensland and worked on a full-time basis for the past 3 months in your nominated occupation. You will also have to show evidence of ongoing employment with a QLD employer for the next 12 months;

Skilled workers living Offshore

QLD is now considering nominating skilled professionals who are based outside of Australia, but these candidates have to nominate an occupation in the QSOL (Queensland Skilled Occupation List) and show evidence of having at least 3 years of post-graduation work experience.

Please note:
Minimum scores in the Points Test and English language requirements vary according to the pathway you will be applying under.

Queensland Allocations numbers for 2022 – 2023

At every start of the financial year, states and territories are allocated the number of candidates they can nominate for each visa, what we call the “number of places”.

Queensland has received a total of 4,435 places for 2022-2023, divided by:

  • 3,000 places for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa
  • 1,200 places for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 visa
  • 235 places for the Business Innovation and Investment Program
